Woodlands School, part of The Marches Academy Trust, is celebrating a positive outcome following its recent Ofsted inspection, which recognised the school’s commitment to supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs and helping them successfully re-engage with education. Inspectors described Woodlands as “a place where pupils are understood as individuals and supported to re-engage with education”, highlighting the school’s nurturing culture, strong relationships and personalised support.
The inspection recognised the significant progress many pupils make from often challenging starting points and praised the school’s work in helping young people feel safe, rebuild confidence and prepare for successful futures.
The report highlights a number of strengths across the school, including the progress pupils make, the central role of personal development and wellbeing, and the strong pastoral support that helps learners manage emotions, relationships and behaviour. Inspectors also recognised the carefully planned careers education and preparation for adulthood that support pupils in understanding future opportunities and ambitions.
A key theme throughout the inspection is the strength of relationships across the school community. Inspectors found that staff know pupils well, understand the barriers they face and provide calm, structured support that enables them to feel safe, settle into school life and engage positively with learning. Pupils spoke confidently about trusted adults and where they would go for help, while respectful interactions between staff and learners help create a strong sense of belonging.
Personal development and wellbeing were identified as particular strengths. The report notes that support for wellbeing is embedded throughout school life, with pupils learning about healthy relationships, personal safety, respect, diversity and life beyond school. Woodlands’ Learning for Life team and therapeutic support help pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence, enabling many to build more positive relationships and aspirations for the future.
The report recognises the opportunities available to pupils through vocational and creative learning, educational visits, work experience and enrichment activities. Vehicle studies and art were highlighted as subjects in which pupils excel, while many learners move on to further education or training, something inspectors described as a significant achievement.
Headteacher Julia Taylor said: “At Woodlands, every young person’s journey is unique, and we are delighted that Ofsted recognised the care, understanding and personalised support that sits at the heart of our school.
Many of our learners join us having faced significant challenges in their education. Our role is to help them feel safe, rebuild confidence, develop positive relationships and begin to believe in their own potential. We are particularly pleased that inspectors recognised the strength of our pastoral support, our focus on personal development and the progress learners make in re-engaging with education.
Success at Woodlands is measured in many ways. For some, attending school regularly, expressing their views, managing emotions more effectively or taking part in learning are life-changing achievements. We are incredibly proud of all our learners and remain committed to helping every young person thrive.”
Chief Executive Officer of The Marches Academy Trust, Sarah Finch, added: “We are incredibly proud of the Woodlands team and the positive recognition this inspection provides. The report reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to supporting some of the most vulnerable young people in our communities and highlights the dedication, expertise and compassion shown by staff every day.
It is particularly encouraging to see recognition of the school’s inclusive culture, strong pastoral care and the success it achieves in helping pupils re-engage with education and prepare for their future lives. We congratulate the staff, governors, pupils and families on this achievement.”
Woodlands School would like to thank its pupils, staff, governors, families and wider community for their continued support. Together, they will continue to provide a nurturing, ambitious and inclusive environment where young people can rebuild confidence, discover their strengths and achieve success in education and beyond.
